As we move towards the 6th Annual Security Summit–Prediction’s status

In about fifteen (15) days we will be having a security conversation at the ITWeb Security Summit 2011 in South Africa, Conference & Expo Day 2 – 11 May. We have just gone through the first quarter 0f 2011 and what are the events and actions we’ve seen alongside the predictions made already?

Imperva predicted that “Trend #8: Hackers Feeling the Heat”  and Security-art predicted that “DDoS attacks will ensue – as more tools are available to cybercriminals as well as to state actors and terrorist organizations” . The Rustock botnet which operated from around 2006 was taken down on March 16, 2011,see the video from  CNBC story on botnets / Rustock takedown. The details on how this was successfully executed are in “Operation b107”.

The  presentation can now be accessed here.

Another way to think about the bots attack

Imagine your car being stolen while you are busy in a meeting. The stolen car is then used to commit a horrendous crime (e.g. bank robbery or heist) and the criminals escape without trace using another car. Your car is taken from the scene by the police and the only prema facie evidence is yours (fingerprints and all other materials properties). The police are now looking for you and you’re still stuck in that long tedious meeting.

Now put your laptop, server, phone etc. in the place of this car
